Today, it's 2018. I started my first website in about 1988; thirty years ago. It wasn't exciting. In fact it wasn't accessible. In those hazy, crazy early days of the internet, I thought if you put something on a server and told people the IP address, they could read it.

My knowledge and web admin skills have improved somewhat since then.

In those very early days, it was all about caving & potholing. I spent my early twenties mostly underground, exploring the lengths and depths of the Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Mendip underworld, and occasionally branched out into Europe with foraging & exploratory expeditions to France, Mallorca & Slovenija. Occasionally, I would surface and walk the hills of the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District, Peak District, Brecon Beacons and the Mendip Hills of Somerset.

Then in 1995, after an aborted attempt in 1992 due to a motorbike accident, I made my first trip to Iceland, and I was hooked. The sheer beauty of the subarctic, the weird combination of fire and ice, the clarity & chill in the air, and the warmth of the people, struck a chord. A few years later, I visited East Greenland, and realised that I loved the Arctic and Subarctic countries. I needed somewhere to write my stories and share my photos.

Arctic Edge was born.

As the years have passed, I no longer go caving, and camping in the frozen North barely appeals any more. My travelling has branched out somewhat, across Europe, to New Zealand and Tasmania, down to Chile and across to the Galapagos, then East to Indonesia. Interspersed with this has been exploration of the UK, my home; from the wilds of North West Scotland to the under-visited Northern Ireland; the Hebrides, Orkney & Shetland.

It's no longer specifically about fire & ice; remote and unspoiled does it for me.

The original Arctic Edge site is long past its best - if it ever got there - and so this site starts a new chapter; with a more me-centric feel, I hope to bring it kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Who knows how long it'll take; I'll start pretty much from scratch, and hopefully you'll like the photos and stories I share as I go along, and try to catch up on the last 30 years of my life.
